Haringey Racers 2, Chelmsford Warriors 4
Chelmsford completed their clean sweep against Haringey this season on Sunday night at the Palace. Former Racer Sean Martin bagged a pair of goals for the visitors to help them all but secure their play-off spot.
Warriors started the brightest with Aaron Mallet in the Racers net kept busy from the outset. Some penalty trouble gave the visitors some extended power play time, including a period of 5-on-3 and the pressure was mounting. Just after the penalties expired, and with the Racers getting bogged down in defence, a fore-checking Martin was able to steal the puck and fire a good shot high into the net in the 11th minute. A few minutes later, TJ Fillery doubled the lead scoring in a goalmouth scramble after Mallet had saved his initial shot. In the latter stages of the session, Haringey got on the board when Sonny Phillips saved Solomon Smith’s shot with Ben Osborne on hand to swat home the rebound.
Early in the second, overlapping Warriors penalties gave Races some extended powerplay time of their own, but the build-up play was hurried and they couldn’t get set. None-the-less, the hosts were having a good session with Josh Abbott and Nick Minhinnick testing Phillips. Therefore Chelmsford’s third goal was a bit of a sucker punch, with Martin producing a very nice finish after deking through the defence. After the goal, Warriors dominated the remainder of the period, but couldn’t extend their lead.
Half way through the final session, Racers got within a goal for the second time. From behind the net, Dan Clayton found Matt Brown out front to score through the five-hole. Any chance of a grandstand finish were soon quashed though with Gary Brown adding a powerplay marker for Warriors, his shot from the blueline flashing though traffic into the top corner.
Racers next game is away at Slough Jets on Saturday 18th March. Face off 6.15pm.
